R. James Yu, MD

Dr. Yu’s superior expertise in robotic surgery for urological cancers is an asset to North Bay Urology and to the Marin healthcare community at large. After graduating from the USC Keck School of Medicine with Highest Distinction and Alpha Omega Alpha honors, Dr. Yu went on to Stanford University where he completed his internship and residencies in General Surgery and Urology. Dr. Yu further refined his surgical expertise with fellowship training in Advanced Robotics and Laparoscopy at the USC Institute of Urology under the direction of the world leader in minimally invasive urological surgery, Dr. Inderbir Gill. His focus is on urologic oncology with specific expertise in minimally invasive surgery for diseases of the adrenal, kidney, ureter, bladder and prostate. Dr. Yu’s experience in robotic urological surgery includes:

  • Radical and simple nerve-sparing prostatectomy
  • Radical cystectomy
  • Partial (kidney-sparing) and radical nephrectomy
  • Pyeloplasty to fix kidney blockages
  • Aenalectomy
  • Ureteral reimplant

While Dr. Yu’s main emphasis is on cancer surgery, he also performs robotic surgeries for other benign disease such as BPH and UPJ obstructions. Dr. Yu’s training at Stanford and USC has allowed him to synthesize various technical approaches as practiced by renowned surgeons at Johns Hopkins, Memorial-Sloan-Kettering, Cleveland Clinic, UCLA, USC and Stanford. He combines the best of these techniques to achieve exceptional oncologic and quality of life outcomes in all urologic cancers.

Dr. Yu’s research interests focus on the development of medical devices for unmet clinical needs in urologic and cardiovascular disease. He has received multiple grants from the NIH, Coulter Foundation, and NCIIA for medical device innovation and has multiple patents issued and pending. He also serves as reviewer for multiple urology journals.
